The 1st CLICKABLE BANNER AD WENT LIVE.

 

The first banner ad was bought by AT&T on HotWired.com, 44% of people who saw it clicked on it and the ad changed the whole advertising industry.

 

 

 

1994.

YAHOO! FOUNDED.
FIRST SOCIAL MEDIA SITE, GEOCITIES.

 

It was the first website that let people build an online community where they could communicate to the world by texting and posting photos. You could also buy and sell things on this platform. Finally it was shut down in 2009.

COOKIE TECHNOLOGY APPEARED

In 94 the cookie technology also appeared. It was used for checking whether visitors have already visited the website of a former computer company named Netscape. In 95 it was integrated in Internet Explorer and it was not really known to the public, reason because they were only accepted randomly

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION “OFFICIALLY” BEGAN

 

Search engine designers recognised that webmasters were making efforts to rank higher, some even trying to manipulate the rankings by stuffing a lot of irrelevant keywords on the page. Search engines started to adjust their design to stop manipulation  and there were more and more things taken in consideration for a higher ranking.

 

 

2000.

GOOGLE LAUNCHED ADWORDS

In the year of 2000 Google launched AdWords where at the beginning advertisers paid for the service monthly, and Google would set up and manage their campaign. To accommodate small businesses and those who wanted to manage their own campaigns, Google introduced the AdWords self-service portal.

UNIVERSAL LAUNCHED FIRST MOBILE MARKETING CAMPAIGN

 

Universal Music chose an Island Records single release to be the basis for Europe’s very first mobile marketing trial. It was a SMS shortcode campaign run by Txtbomb.

 

 

 

2005.

LAUNCH OF YOUTUBE

 

The inspiration for YouTube first came from Janet Jackson‘s role in the 2004 Super Bowl incident when her breast was exposed during her performance. Karim, one of the founders,  could not easily find video clips of the event online, which led to the idea of a video sharing site.

 

 

 

2006.

SPLIT-TESTING IN MARKETING BEGAN

 

The first test was unsuccessful due to glitches that resulted from slow loading times. Later A/B testing research would be more advanced, after Google’s first test, Google ran over 7,000 different A/B tests.

“PANDA” UPDATED GOOGLE’S RANKING ALGORITHM

 

It was the first major change to Google‘s search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. The change aimed to lower the rank of low-quality sites in particular and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results.
